A Night in the Sahara: What to Expect from a Desert Camp

Spending a night in Merzouga is the highlight of any trip to Morocco. It’s an opportunity to disconnect from the modern world and connect with nature, culture, and a profound sense of peace. But what does this experience actually entail?

The Journey In

Your adventure typically begins in the late afternoon in Merzouga. Here, you'll trade your car for a more traditional mode of transport: a camel. The camel trek into the dunes is an iconic part of the experience. Led by a local guide, your caravan will move at a gentle, rhythmic pace, allowing you to absorb the stunning scenery. The trek usually lasts for about 60-90 minutes, timed perfectly to coincide with the setting sun.

Arrival at the Camp

As dusk settles, you'll see the faint lights of your camp nestled amongst the dunes. Most camps consist of a central courtyard area surrounded by private sleeping tents. There are two main types of camps:

• Standard Camps: These offer a more rustic and traditional experience. You'll have a comfortable private tent with beds and blankets, and shared bathroom facilities.
• Luxury Camps: For those seeking more comfort, luxury camps offer spacious, beautifully decorated tents with en-suite private bathrooms, hot water showers, and king-sized beds.

Regardless of your choice, you'll be greeted with warm Berber hospitality, usually in the form of sweet mint tea.

An Evening of Culture and Cuisine

After settling in, the evening's festivities begin. Dinner is a highlight, often featuring a delicious, home-cooked tagine or couscous served under the stars or in a large dining tent.

The real magic happens after dinner. You'll gather around a crackling campfire where your Berber hosts will play traditional music on drums. The rhythmic beats under the vast, star-filled sky are hypnotic. Don't be shy—you'll likely be invited to join in the drumming and dancing!

Stargazing

Away from city lights, the Sahara sky is one of the clearest you will ever see. The Milky Way stretches across the heavens like a river of diamonds. You'll be able to spot constellations and shooting stars with incredible clarity. It's a humbling and awe-inspiring sight that will stay with you long after you've left.

Waking Up in the Desert

You'll be woken early to witness another spectacle: the sunrise. Climbing a nearby dune to watch the sun emerge and cast its first golden rays over the silent dunes is a truly spiritual experience. After the sunrise, you'll enjoy a hearty breakfast back at camp before your camel trek or 4x4 transfer back to Merzouga, filled with memories to last a lifetime.
